Environmental and Cultural Awareness and Education

Educating also means preserving.

In the Montado, each tree and each natural cycle plays an essential role in maintaining biodiversity and the balance of the territory.

As the Montado is part of its identity and the history of its communities, preserving it also means educating people about the traditions and heritage of cork, strengthening cultural ties and transmitting the pride associated with this heritage.

Through awareness programs, guided tours, and environmental education projects:

We promote understanding of the ecological value of the Montado;
We encourage sustainable practices among communities and visitors;
We reinforce the awareness that protecting this ecosystem is ensuring the future
We value the culture and traditions linked to the Montado, transmitting knowledge about heritage and strengthening local identity.

PROVERE 2030 Montado de Sobro e Cortiça promotes various environmental and cultural education initiatives and educational programs that bring children, young people, and families closer to the richness of this ecosystem.

Among these, we highlight the Tertúlias do Montado (Montado Gatherings), promoted by the University of Évora—a project that fosters regular and structured dialogue between the various stakeholders involved in the study, management, and sustainable use of the silvopastoral Montado.

The Herdade dos Concelhos Environmental Interpretation Center — owned by the Municipality of Coruche — plans to create recreational, educational, and cultural spaces for the dissemination/knowledge and appreciation of the Montado and about the Montado; It also plans to create outdoor sports areas in harmony with nature.

The Montado Interactive Center, promoted by the Municipality of Portel — which initially plans to create a visitor center and support unit, providing scientific information, dissemination, and appreciation of this natural heritage in an environmentally responsible manner, through interactive technologies.

Grande Rota do Montado (Great Montado Route), promoted by the 14 municipalities that make up CIMAC (Inter-municipal Community of Central Alentejo) — a rich inter-municipal project that includes walking and cycling routes, consisting of a biodiversity study and actions to promote and disseminate the ecosystem, ideal for environmental education, the study of biodiversity, and dissemination actions, ideal for environmental education on walking and cycling trails.

The Montado — Unique Tourist Experiences, a project structured around the intangible cultural heritage associated with the Montado, biodiversity, and the unique ecosystem, also highlighting the harvesting of cork, its preparation, and transformation.

Finally, we also highlight the project Texturas do Montado, Residências Artísticas (Textures of the Montado, Artistic Residencies), promoted by the Observatório da Paisagem da Charneca (Charneca Landscape Observatory) — a program of artistic residencies to develop projects in the field of visual arts, focusing on the cork oak and the Montado, with the participation of 3 to 5 European artists.
